I, Tonya

Given the dearth of movies based on sports on Netflix/ Amazon Prime/ YouTube, this week was dedicated to sports stories in varied times which were critically acclaimed as well as worth watching. I, Tonya is a riveting tale shot smartly as a documentary about the life of Tonya Harding who was an ice skater for the US and also represented it in the Olympics. Margot Robbie embodies the personality and twisted circumstances of the character and makes it a riveting watch which also won a lot of plaudits.

I, Tonya

The film is all about the life and times of Tonya Harding, the figure skater, who undergoes a lot of twists and turns given the kind of company she has at a very young age and eventually what she makes of her life in capitalist America, no harm intended.

Since the movie is a tell-all account, it leaves little to the imagination and there is smart direction by Craig Gillespie to maximize the dark humour and the utter stupidity on the show as the years unfold. One of the more interesting dialogues in the film is by LaVona Harding played by Allison Janney who tells her daughter,” you f ck dumb, you don’t marry dumb” to an impressionable Tonya since she is in complete disagreement with her.

All in all, a movie well worth the effort and a must recommend given the complexity and hardships involved.
