Another sports story which was even more interesting given it was about Formula 1 in a bygone era of 1976 about the rivalry between Niki Lauda played by Daniel Bruhl and James Hunt played by Chris Hemsworth and their fight for the World Championship as Ferrari and Mclaren drivers respectively. Even though the movie was released in 2013, it assumes a lot of importance because the ownership of Formula 1 has shifted from Bernie Ecclestone to Liberty Media and today the Constructor’s Championship was decided as it went to Mercedes AMG Petronas while the Driver’s Championship went to Lewis Hamilton earlier. Couldn’t do without mentioning the goings on given that I am an avid sports buff.
The movie justifiably has a rating of 8.1 on IMDB and in no small measure by an able Director, Ron Howard. Niki Lauda can still be seen at the races till this day but in equal measure, it is about the rivalry that he shared with James Hunt and is often the case in sporting rivalries when the two protagonists are a study in contrast and the rest can be a facade.
Given the tumultuous times that McLaren nowadays find themselves in, the movie epitomizes the thrills and adrenaline rush associated with revving engines and gorgeous distractions, the movie is a celebration of why boys will be boys.
