At the outset, I want to mention that this is about offensive tweets on Twitter and I will be very objective about it as a third person or a layman. I respect Hinduism as much as Islam but for me, Eros Now came up with an offensive tweet period.
Let me break it down for you. Navratri, is a Hindu festival which literally translates as the festival of “Nine nights” and as per my understanding broadly seeing how my friends celebrate it. The population at large observes fasts from dawn to dusk in reverence of Goddess Durga celebrating the triumph of good over evil. This is my understanding
This brings us to my other tangent of Hindi Media including social media and where we find ourselves in, owing to the complete disintegration in terms of the message being portrayed and how it is perceived. I have written another post dwelling on the same topic as Melodrama Inc. It is the absolute pits and I am not sure what I am going to teach my son or justify what is being spread through varied CHANNELS.
The above tweet is depicting one of the more famous leading men in the Indian Film Industry with a caption that reads Let’s have some “fun in my pyjama”. Not to forget the accompanying #HappyNavratri.
Adding to the crass message above is a picture of arguably the most famous leading actor renowned for his Eid releases with an accompanying message, “You need a Stick to play Dandiya. I have one”. Dandiya is a community celebration where people celebrate by dancing to popular tunes along with sticks to set choreography.
Katrina Kaif in a saree or the lack of it and then celebrating the NIGHT in the Ratri? OH MY GOD. Just in case you’ve forgotten, the production house in question is all about films and TV shows and if tweets such as the above can come out then I shudder to think about the rest.
The above is the ensuing apology and the deletion of the tweets but the noise being made is about the Eros Now CEO who happens to be from a separate faith. This is happening way too often in India and if this is the way it is being catered to then I’m pretty sure we’re headed for civil strife and instances for the latter have also happened in the recent past.
Could we please have some sense and order. I do not let my son watch Hindi programming for this reason. Proud Indian but I am not sure about the roadmap built on fundamentals. Tsk, Tsk.
